Gallbladder Surgery : Removing Gallstones

The  gallbladderis a small, pear-shaped sac on the underside of the liver, on the right side of the abdomen that holds approximately one half cup of yellowish-green fluid called bile. The liver produces liquid bile and it then moves it into the gallbladder where it becomes 4-12 times more concentrated than it was in the liver.

  • Gallbladder problems are usually caused by the presence of gallstones: small hard masses consisting primarily of cholesterol and bile salts that form in the gallbladder or in the bile duct

  •
  • It is uncertain why some people form gallstones.
  • There is no known means to prevent gallstones.
  • These stones may block the flow of bile out of the gallbladder, causing it to swell and resulting in sharp abdominal pain, vomiting, indigestion and, occasionally, fever.
  • If the gallstone blocks the common bile duct, jaundice (a yellowing of the skin) can occur.

There are two main ways of removing a gallbladder.

This is the most common type of operation to remove your gallbladder. It involves using a tiny camera and surgical instruments that are inserted through small cuts (incisions) in your abdomen.

In open cholecystectomy the gallbladder is removed through one large incision in your abdomen. This technique is called open surgery. It is a more invasive operation than keyhole surgery. You need to be in hospital for longer and it takes longer to recover.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF PERFORMING THE PROCEDURE LAPAROSCOPICALLY?
  • Rather than a five to seven inch incision, the operation requires only four small openings in the abdomen.
  • Patients usually have minimal post-operative pain.
  • Patients usually experience faster recovery than open gallbladder surgery patients.
  • Most patients go home within one day and enjoy a quicker return to normal activities.
Costof gallbladder removal surgery in India is less than other western countries. Valli Hospital, Erode provides advanced gallbladder surgery at affordable rate. Dr. T. K Swamy is well experinced gastroenterologist in India, at Valli, Erode.
